Wangsit : The Revelations of Java

WANGSIT is a long-term photographic and film project devoted to the rituals and living traditions of Java. It follows men and women who choose to keep these practices alive, often against the odds, in a country modernising at a very high pace. Through transmitted movement since a very young age, spiritual practice and collective commitment, the project explores what leads an individual to take their place within a tradition, to become its guardian, and to find in it an identity the contemporary world does not offer. Some chapters dwell on a single practice, others cross several territories, but all share the same attention to interiority, and to the living bond between the intimate and the collective.
